There is a wide range of opportunities for musicians, songwriters and producers within the musical life of the school. 

Instrument, Vocal and Songwriting Lessons

Instrument, vocal and songwriting lessons with practicing industry professionals are available to all students whatever standard from beginner to Grade 8 and beyond.

Performance

Students are encouraged to perform in the various shows and concerts, both formal and informal, which take place throughout the year. Own compositions are positively encouraged and supported by songwriting lessons and musicianship Enigma sessions. Music Technology students form an integral part of the technical team for the shows which initiates them into the dynamic world of live sound.

Album Academy - The Hurtwood Album

The Hurtwood Album is produced every year and students can be involved both as instrumentalists and engineer/producers. Again, Music Technology students take the lead in the production process and are encouraged to work well beyond the standards expected at A Level. The very best in the year are invited to join Album Academy where they learn advanced recording and production techniques and are ultimately responsible for delivering the Hurtwood Album. As with all Hurtwood endeavours, expectations are high and students work with industry professionals throughout.

Project YouTube

Project YouTube offers an incredible opportunity for students to showcase their talents to a global audience and receive recognition for their work. This initiative includes professional music video shoots, featured on a YouTube channel with tens of thousands of subscribers. Students from across the school are invited to participate, whether as singers, musicians, film crew, or photographers, in what has become an outstanding platform for creativity.

While auditions are held annually for singers, musicians have the chance to engage in various performance opportunities throughout the year. A dedicated crew of filmmakers, audio technicians and photographers also contributes to the success of each video project, ensuring a high standard of production.

Previous videos from Project YouTube have received millions of views, setting a benchmark for excellence. Many students involved have gone on to secure work in their chosen fields, making this project an ideal stepping stone for those looking to launch their careers.

The Hurtwood Concert

This is one of the main events of the school year. The Hurtwood Concert is an immense high-octane mix of lights, projections, film, dance and sound. All types of music are represented from Classical to Jazz, Rock, and Pop, and previous years have also included Irish Folk, Opera and Traditional Chinese Music played on authentic instruments. This is your chance to perform with the support of a professional band supported by lights and sound designed and operated by industry professionals. The competition for concert slots is fierce but there are roles for everyone, and many students say this is the most rewarding thing they do at Hurtwood.

Lunchtime Concerts

Step into a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere with our regular Lunchtime Concerts! These informal sessions give students the perfect opportunity to showcase their talents in a relaxed setting, performing to an enthusiastic and appreciative Hurtwood audience. Whether it's an intimate solo or a dynamic group performance, these concerts celebrate the diverse musical abilities of our students and are a popular way to brighten up the day with live music.

The Gig of Glory

Get ready for the ultimate rock showdown! The "Gig of Glory" is our annual spectacle where school rock bands take centre stage, backed by full Hurtwood technical support. This high-energy event has quickly become one of the most anticipated highlights of the year, delivering unforgettable performances and raw musical talent. With a concert experience that rivals professional gigs, it’s a must-see event for anyone who loves live music and the excitement of rock 'n' roll.

The Classical Concert

Once a year, the stage is set for elegance and sophistication as we host the prestigious Classical Concert. This evening is dedicated to showcasing the exceptional classical music talent at Hurtwood, featuring stunning performances that highlight the grace, skill, and passion of our students. From orchestral pieces to solo performances, this concert is a true celebration of timeless music and artistry.
